Engagement ? Faux ami !

« Why did you leave your job in France? » demande Kate. Quentin n’ose pas lui avouer à quel point sa décision de quitter son travail avait été influencée par elle.

« I had too many engagements. » répond Quentin.

« Engagements? » dit Kate, en fronçant les sourcils mais avec un sourire.

« Yeah. I had to work long hours. I was responsible for things that I wasn’t paid for. My boss expected me to be available all the time, even at the weekend. »

« Ah, you mean commitments? » répond Kate. Elle ne pensait pas, après tout, qu’il avait quitté son emploi pour cause de ‘trop de fiancées’ !

Attention au faux ami : engagement (anglais) ≠ engagement (français).

Congratulations on your engagement! = Félicitations pour vos fiançailles !

J’avais trop d’engagements au travail = I had too many commitments at work.
